Don't let them wait until they get home if showers are available at your location. And insist on their using a wash cloth or shower mesh to help remove dirt by roughing up the skin. They wouldn't wash their cars with their bare hands. They shouldn't wash their bodies that way either! If showers are not available, body wipes are also helpful. Begin each day with freshly laundered clothing and towels. There's no better breeding ground for germs than sweaty gear kept in a gym bag and left in a dark locker or closet. KS Skin Creme is an essential part of any hygiene protocol. KS helps by suspending dirt, grime and other contaminates from adhering to the body allowing for them to be washed away when cleaned with soap and water. Educate your athletes, parents and staff regarding MRSA, a potentially life-threatening antibiotic resistant infection that is on the rise in athletic settings. Keep a close watch on any cuts or scrapes that your athletes have. Immediately see a doctor if there is any question regarding infection. Ban sharing of personal items that can transmit infections such as towels, razors and water bottles. Athletes with infected or open wounds should not wrestle nor should they use whirlpools or pools. Clean and disinfect mats before each use using a clean, laundered mop. If you roll your mats at the end of the day, the underside needs to be disinfected as well as the floor on which the mats are kept. Clean and disinfect all hard, non-porous gear and surfaces such as wall mats and exercise equipment regularly. Your disinfectant should kill MRSA, trichophyton mentagrophites (causative agent of ringworm), staph, strep, herpes simples, hepatitis B & C and the Aids virus. These germs must be listed on the label, or the product may not kill them. Just because a product says it is a wrestling mat disinfectant does not mean it will kill the germs wrestlers need to have killed. Read the label of your disinfectant and follow the directions. Use the proper ratio of product to water. Too little and you might not be disinfecting properly. Too much product is wasteful, and your mats can become slippery and actually retain more dirt. If your bucket doesn't have markings on it to tell you how much it holds, figure it out yourself by filling up an empty gallon jug with water. You can then mark the bucket yourself with an indelible marker. If your disinfectant does not come with a measuring aid, get yourself a measuring cup with ounces on it and use that for dispensing the solution. Most disinfectants (including ours) require that a surface remain wet with the cleaning solution for 10 minutes in order to give the disinfectant time to kill effectively. Again, follow the label directions. Limit street shoes on your mats as well as food and drink. Use the Sole Mat to clean the soles of the athletes' shoes prior to their stepping on to the mats. Be aware that products claiming to provide 24/7 protection from microbes may just provide protection from odor and stain causing organisms, not those that cause disease.
